Well, it might be some kind of misunderstanding… The XV-1 was their flagship product in end of the 90s and it cost I believe $1.6K-$1.8K retail. The reasons why I know it certainly because I had a few quite credible people at that time who stro...

With SME 3012 (Shelter 901), Ortofon RMG 309 (Orotofon S15-T) and Micro 237 (french mono cartridge early 50's, unbeatable)...I couldn't really get the sound I wanted out of the TT until I put it on the SR stands, I envy your vibraplane but trying shi...
What is the problem ? Listening to the, for example, rca victor red-seal recordings of CSO /Reiner I hear midbass weight, presence and realism that I do not have with the shelter. It is not the pushing forward or highl...

This is the point, Paul: is it a self-propelled, self-ass-licking FR7 club or does this cart has any merit?Old vs. new, new vs. old...in the world of planned obsolescnce I do not know how to navigate. There is a myriad of models, but what they are wor...

Thanks Romy. I didn't ask for advice about brands or models, just knowing the technical features an arm should meet to work fine with the Shelter, the same you commented that the Denon needs high mass arms of about 30 grs. I'll read your post, s...

My Shelter is set properly; in fact the setting was not changed for years. On my TT there are 4 arms and there is another stereo arm. I know what shell be difference between my Second stereo arm and my Reference arm. No my Second stereo arm over perf...

Alex, a cartridge loading has no “right” absolute value, it has of courses a certain fork of right values but to loading of a cartridge up to one of a few Ohms would be depended from many parameters, in some instanced unexpected. In my hands, used as...

RomyI for the last couple of years have been a happy Shelter 901 owner until now. The reason for the change is written here.http://www.vinylengine.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=14487My low mileage 901 is about to go as it was bettered by a looong margin...

Agreed. I only wish I could hear the new Platinum for myself... :-) Meanwhile I'll be looking for a used Shelter 901....

After seeing Paul's recent lament that classical records are getting harder and harder to find, I noted that I listen to only a small portion of my collection. I have my favorites, but I wondered about everyone else. What are your favorite performance...

Maybe, maybe not although I'd expect it to be unlikely with a Koetsu, Shelter 901 or an SPU at the front! Not unless they are very different cartridges to the samples I've listened to....
We don't need to sell units to survive, we have a real job and High End is a hobby
Stitch I really agree with you but to be more clear we are kind of guilty as well I think WE as audio people never took a part in audio in...

Actually the popular stiff Denons (103, 103R) with compliance of 5 need no less the 35g of effective mass, but even this mass will not help them. The Shelter has a “normal” compliance, I do not remember how much exactly but I think that it is somewhe...
|
Tks Romy, well...the SME has actually a mass of 9.5gr. Could eventually use a Micro MA505 with a slightely higher mass (guess around 11gr), have u ever tried it with the Shelter ? Was also wondering if the Ortofon T30 cd be used with some sense to ch...

It just was brought to my attention that Shelters released 2 new cartridges: 7000 and 9000. They claim for both: New design technology. Newly designed body, high rigidity, improved front-yoke, larger diameter PC-OCC lead wires wound around the redesi...

Possible, with all my conversation about Mantis I do not remember I ever made any guess or assumption how it might sound. In horns, I feel I am qualified to make sometimes very bold assessments with very high prece...
I agree, the Shelter transformer is nothing special, but when you really want to loose hairs, try the one from Koetsu. Well, living in a world of morons I spend - unfortunately - too much time with reading idiotic reviews fr...
When youmdiscuss silicon dumping with your 3012 do you mean the silicon you put on headshell orDo you mean you use a silicon bath to damp the arm resonance, or both? I can't find the thread and I have decided to spend some ...

Thanks for the comment, since I read your other post about the plain 103 and other 103 models, I decided to post my reply here, but it had been better in the other thread. I have no experience with the 103M and in general with phono carts. You're rig...

When people ask me what I would like to do if I were not a software engineer I usually reply that I would like to work in Cat's shelter. I would like to be surrounded with hundreds Cat's who will even walk across me like I am a piece of furniture - w...

SOS, please note that your PP 2000 does not isolate one component from another within the reconstituted 60 Hz circuit. It only isolates those components from the noisy and variable wall voltage. Since you think you must isolate your TT and phono stag...

Stressing Bass in my former post I would like do not overly accent the lower bass itself but rather an organic combination of bass with something that I would call “full body” sound.
It we look at many properly setups, loaded and amplified cartridge...

On its great majority, I share your opinion about reviewers and the audio industry goals and means. That's why I don't give a damn about their articles, but it's just entertainment reading them. Have you tried teflon tape wraped around the tonearm's ...

Good day, asking experts if it's worth mounting a Shelter 901 on a SME 309 arm. Resonance frequency shuld get upto to 12.86hz (being 17.6gr arm+cartridge and 9cu Shelter's compliance) which guess too high. Any guideline ? Many tks for advise. Cia...

RomyHaving worked in a high end shop and doing lots of carts I will lend my experiences.Suspensions either harden or soften. When they soften you will notice that your VTA starts to go, you have to lift the rear of the cart and they go quite rapidly....

Hi, I'll be very interested to see what you end up with. I really like my Shelter 901, but would like something which gives me a little more of the sound that i'm getting from my tuner. What do I mean by that, more realistic space/tone pe...

Hi Romy,I've never listened to a Shelter, but for what I know about it from your comments (none but I believe I've got an idea about its way to make music regarding you goals) I thought it was it.Sure, listening to those performances in your system w...

OK, not to use "that word"; it is obviously an inverted and self-limiting concept as you tab it, and it is an easy, slippery slope to slide down.So how does one {mentally/verbally] approach situations where certain otherwise-"acceptable" compone...

I was stressing a couple days ago in Reed’s threads a point that the effective mass of tonearms itself is irrelevant for this type of cartridges. There is absolutely no sense to change tonearm just because you would like to have “slightly higher mas...
